It is one of the most common blood tests done in Malaysia — a single blood sample that gives a broad snapshot of your overall health. What is a full blood count (FBC) test?

A full blood count is a common blood test that measures the different types of cells in your blood. A small blood sample is taken and analysed to count and describe three main components: red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Because these cells carry oxygen, fight infection and help your blood clot, their numbers reveal a lot about how your body is working.

You may see the same test called a complete blood count (CBC) — the two terms mean exactly the same thing. "FBC" is the more common name in Malaysia, the UK and Australia, while "CBC" is used in the US.

What does an FBC test measure?

A full blood count reports on several related values. The main ones are:

  • Red blood cell count (RBC) — the number of red blood cells, which carry oxygen around your body.
  • Haemoglobin (Hb) — the oxygen-carrying protein inside red blood cells. A low level is the usual marker of anaemia.
  • Haematocrit (HCT) — the percentage of your blood volume made up of red blood cells.
  • White blood cell count (WBC) — the number of white blood cells, your immune system’s front line against infection.
  • White blood cell differential — the breakdown of the different types of white blood cells (neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils and basophils).
  • Platelet count — the cells that help your blood clot and stop bleeding.
  • Red cell indices (MCV, MCH, MCHC, RDW) — describe the size and haemoglobin content of your red blood cells, which helps pinpoint the type of anaemia.

Below are typical adult reference ranges. Your laboratory’s normal range may differ slightly, and ranges vary by sex, age and pregnancy — so always read your result against the range printed on your report.

A note on units. Malaysian labs report cell counts per litre of blood, so you will see values like "×10⁹/L". The exact reference range depends on the analyser and the population — a value just outside the range is not automatically a problem.

What can an FBC blood test detect?

An FBC does not name a specific disease, but a result outside the normal range points your doctor toward the next step. Common patterns include:

  • Anaemia — low haemoglobin, often from iron deficiency, blood loss or nutritional gaps. The red cell indices (MCV, MCH, RDW) help show whether it is iron-related or another cause.
  • Infection or inflammation — a raised white blood cell count, sometimes with a shift in the white cell differential.
  • Clotting and bleeding risk — a low platelet count can raise bleeding risk, while a very high count can raise the risk of blood clots.
  • Blood disorders — abnormalities across several values may prompt a blood film or further tests to look at the bone marrow.

Because so many conditions can affect blood cell counts, an abnormal FBC is a starting point . Your doctor interprets it alongside your symptoms and, if needed, orders further tests such as an iron study, a blood film or a repeat count.

How do I prepare for a full blood count?

For an FBC on its own, preparation is simple:

  1. No fasting needed for the FBC itself. If your FBC is bundled with glucose or a lipid profile, you may be asked to fast 8–12 hours — we confirm this when you book.
  2. Stay hydrated — plain water is fine and makes the blood draw easier.
